Wolf Ignition Faults in Weston: Spark, Gas or Something Wet
One burner misbehaving points at its own cap, ports and electrode; every burner misbehaving points at the shared spark module, the earth path or the gas supply. Answer that question first, then look at where the spark is actually landing.
Safety comes before diagnosis. If there is a gas odour in the room that lingers after the knob has gone back to off, stop reading, get everyone out of the house, and telephone the utility from the driveway. Do not open panels, do not test anything, and do not wait for a repair booking. Nothing in the rest of this piece is more important than that paragraph.
Assuming the air is clear, the clicking is the symptom to work with, and there is one question that cuts the field in half before you have picked up a tool.
One burner, or all of them? Answer that first
Light each one in turn and keep score. If a single burner is slow or dead while its neighbours catch immediately, the problem is that burner’s own hardware — its cap, the ports around the rim, the electrode beside it. Nothing shared is implicated, and the rest of the appliance has just proved it. If every burner struggles, the shared parts move to the front of the queue: the spark module, the earth, or gas arriving at the manifold.
One thing that regularly gets misread. A single module usually fires every electrode at once, so opening one valve makes the whole top click in chorus. That is how the appliance is built. It is not evidence of a widespread fault and it should not be treated as one. Clicking with all the knobs off, however, is genuinely abnormal — it means the circuit is being held closed by something, most often a switch behind a knob or the module itself, and it goes on the list for a visit rather than into your afternoon.
Make notes before you start. Which burners, how bad, whether it is worse from cold, and what changed in the days before it began. On the big 48- and 60-inch appliances that anchor most Weston kitchens there are enough burners for a pattern to be obvious once written down and invisible when carried in your head — the two on the left, say, or every one on the same side as the griddle.
The cap, the ports and the last time it was cleaned
Nine times in ten the fix is here, and none of it needs anything more than a cold appliance and good light. Lift each cap and look at how it beds down. If it is sitting even slightly high — caught on debris, on a lug that has not dropped into its slot, on a grain of something — the gas leaves the burner at a different angle from the one the spark is aimed at, and it will not light no matter how healthy the ignition is.
Then the ports. Boil-over bakes on and seals them, and a partly sealed ring lights on one side, travels slowly round, or does not carry at all. Clear each port with a pin or a stiff bristle, not with a drill and not with anything that takes metal away, because the port sizes are engineered and enlarging one changes the way the flame behaves permanently.
Cleaning is the other half of this section, and in Weston it comes up constantly, because a great many of these kitchens are cleaned to a schedule by somebody who is thorough. Thorough is the problem: liquid finds its way onto the electrode, and while it is there the charge takes the wet path instead of the intended one. An appliance that lit perfectly on Thursday and refuses on Friday morning very often just needs to be dried out and left. Take the parts off, dry them properly, put them back the right way round and try again later — replacing components at this stage is how people buy parts they did not need. To be sure a cap is home, set it on cold and give it a gentle turn; a seated cap settles and stays put rather than rocking under your fingers.
Where the spark is meant to land
Look at the spark, in a darkened kitchen, rather than listening to it. What you want is a tight blue arc crossing the small gap between the electrode tip and the metal next to it, at a steady rhythm. If the arc is going anywhere else — down the side of the ceramic, to a grate, to the wrong part of the burner — the module is working perfectly and the appliance still will not light.
The commonest cause of a misdirected arc is a fracture in the white ceramic sleeve that insulates the electrode. Once cracked, the charge finds earth early and never reaches the tip. You will hear normal clicking and see either nothing at the gap or a stray flicker somewhere it does not belong.
The second cause is a bridge of residue. Grease, dried sugar or the film left by a cleaning product across the gap gives the charge an easier route than the air, and it will take it every time. Wipe the electrode and the metal around it clean and dry with the appliance cold, and re-check. Sound tells you nothing here: a cracked insulator, a bridged gap and a perfectly working ignition system all click identically, which is precisely why this check is done with your eyes.
When the spark is fine and nothing catches
If the arc is clean, well aimed and steady and still nothing lights, the question has moved to whether gas is arriving. Work through the obvious in order. Is anything else in the house on gas still working? Has the manual shut-off behind or beneath the appliance been touched — by a floor fitter, a cleaner, or whoever was last behind it? Has the supply been interrupted recently for work in the street or at the meter, which can leave air in the line that takes a while to clear?
What is not a diagnostic step is going round the appliance smelling for gas. It tells you nothing reliable about pressure or supply, it delays the one action that matters if there is a genuine leak, and it puts your head where you least want it. The rule stays what it was at the top of the page: an odour that lingers means out of the house and a call to the utility.
That is also the boundary. Regulators, valves, manifold pressure and the module’s output are measured with instruments by someone who does this daily, and there is no homeowner version of those tests. The call that is worth making

The flame is orange rather than blue — is that related?
It can share a cause. Orange or yellow tips usually mean the air and gas mixture is wrong, or that something is sitting in the flame path — debris in the ports, a cap slightly out of position, dust drawn in after work in the room. Those are the same conditions that make a burner slow to catch, so check the caps and ports before assuming you have two unrelated problems.
The burner clicks — does that mean the igniter is fine?
Only that the module is firing. The click confirms the spark circuit is energised; it says nothing about where the spark lands or whether gas has reached the burner. A fractured ceramic insulator or a bridge of residue will send the charge somewhere useless and click just as convincingly as a healthy assembly does. Look at the arc itself in a darkened kitchen rather than judging by sound.
All the burners click at once when I turn one knob. What is that?
Normal, on most of these appliances. One spark module serves every electrode, so opening a single valve fires them all and the whole top clicks together. It sounds dramatic and means nothing. The version that does matter is clicking that carries on when every knob is off, which points at a switch or the module holding the circuit closed and needs looking at.
